Happy International Women’s Day from Chupi Sweetman

Friday, March 6th, 2020

It’s crazy to think that even today in 2020 women still face discrimination, from the glass ceiling to the pay gap I think it’s so important we recognise there is still gender based discrimination and celebrate the incredible women in our lives. International Women’s Day is a wonderful chance to not only tell the women in our lives we love them, but to look around us and see what we can do to build a fairer world. I hope our daughters, and indeed our sons, will have a far more equal experience.

We are brought up to understand that if we really truly want something you have to fight hard for it, so whilst it is a challenge I have never let anyone else’s attitude hinder my ambition to build something beautiful.

From being refused a credit card when I first started the business, to the perception that women just want “safe” jobs I have experienced some ridiculously silly prejudices as a woman. But I think we are brought up to understand that if we really truly want something you have to fight hard for it, so whilst it is a challenge I have never let anyone else’s attitude hinder my ambition to build something beautiful.

I get to work with such an incredible group of women (and men) that sometimes it’s easy to forget that gender inequality exists. Every day they astound me with their drive, ambition and innovation. If you want to see whether women can dream as big and work as hard as men, pop by our studio on any given day!

For every person who told me it wasn’t possible, brilliant strong women offered me advice or support. I have been a member of Going for Growth since 2015, having been mentored by it’s founder Paula Fitzsimons, chairperson of Primark Breege O’Donoghue and now I’m getting to give back to the next generation of amazing female entrepreneurs. From the mentors to my peers to the women I get to work with they inspire me.

IWD is an wonderful chance to not only tell the women in our lives we love them, but to look around us and see what we can do to build a fairer world.

My friends are a constant source of inspiration, from huge careers to putting their families first seeing the challenges they have faced and overcome inspires me.

I’m so inspired by my mum. She is one of the founding members of the Irish Women’s Movement. She brought my brother and I up to believe we could be anything wanted to be – what more could you ask for than that?

Love, Chupi x
