The joy of seeing your mum become a grandmother…

To celebrate our new ‘From My Hands to Theirs’ series, we sat down with Chupi’s head of marketing Laura Swanton to talk about motherhood, balance and finding the fun.

Family dinners in our house are my favourite place to be. My mum Anna is the best cook (I know everyone says that about their mum, but she really is) – she can create a banquet out of an onion and a tomato, and always does it with ease and it’s never boring, she experiments with flavour and tries out beautiful recipes.

With everyone having such busy lives I love how a simple pasta dinner can be so connecting and joyful. No matter how many challenges are going on in life, the weight of the world is lifted when you take the time to sit and eat together. This is something I have recreated with my own family – the weekdays can be busy, but Thursday-Sunday family dinners are sacrilegious.

I still steal my mum’s clothes and if I could get away with packing any of her house in my suitcase I would. We are very close and share a love for many of the same things: food, style, interiors, books. It sparks joy when my mum compliments me on my style, as I hold hers in the highest regard.

I want to empower my daughters to know that they can be brilliant, and it’s hugely important for me to work with someone like Chupi, who is leading the way.

My mum is incredibly resourceful and practical – she sees nothing as a barrier, which I think she has instilled in me, but she never complains or gets too stressed. She is much more consistent at life – she enjoys life and eats well, walks, swims and does yoga. I tend to be more of an all or nothing person – run, run, run,  and then nothing and go again. As I grow (and become that bit wiser) I strive to be more like her.

When we were little, mum used to bring us to the beach after school on sunny days to meet friends. I remember one day the weather was so nice that she took me out of school early, brought a picnic and we spent the day with our friends on the beach. I couldn’t believe that I got to skip school and get to play in the sun!

It’s been so special seeing my mum become a grandmother, and I love how my girls adore her.

My first baby arrived when I was living in London, two weeks early. My mum got the next flight over and I think it was one of the best feelings, introducing my daughter Olivia to her. When we arrived home to our apartment my mum and sister were there: they had cooked my favourite dinner, there were fresh sheets on my bed and new pyjamas left out, it was like winning the lottery.

I love the joy, the fun and the giggles that motherhood is bringing right now with my daughters Olivia, five, and Rebecca, two. I love it all and learn something new every day. My daughters teach me how to be better, and I feel more focused on what’s important in life.

Every piece of jewellery I buy has a meaning and was purchased with the intention of it being passed down to my daughters. I bought myself a Chupi Eternity diamond ring when I had Rebecca, so I will pass that to her. And when my eldest Olivia was born we had just bought a house so I bought something small to mark the occasion – a plated initial disc, which I am now upgrading to an Edwardian eternity ring so I can pass that on to her. Jewellery should tell a story and be part of your story.

Finding the balance between being a woman in business and a mother is always going to be complicated, so there are of course lots of challenges. But working for a company that understands and values your family life is key. I want to empower my daughters to know that they can be brilliant, and it’s hugely important for me to work with someone like Chupi, who is leading the way.

My mum has a great way of reminding me that the simple things in life are what matter – a hug, family dinners, a good book and a walk, a swim are medicinal.

Mum gave up work when she had us, and now that I’m a mum I’ve got so much more respect and admiration for her for that. My dad ran his own business and she supported him and raised us – there is no doubt in my mind that this is more difficult than any job. I love my children, but coming to work offers a change in headspace and although it can be challenging trying to balance it all, I can’t imagine how difficult it was for her to not have that outlet.

When it comes to my children, mum often reminds me to ‘keep it simple’. My kids are happiest with a vanilla ice cream in our back garden or in their wellies and raincoats on the beach. I sometimes think ‘Oh, I must do this and bring them here and there and feed them this and that’, but my mum has a great way of reminding me that none of it matters and that the simple things in life – a hug, family dinners, a good book and a walk, a swim are medicinal.

It’s been so special seeing my mum become a grandmother, and I love how my girls adore her. We spend a lot of time in the west of Ireland in Connemara with her, where she brings them to the beach. Mum loves to swim all year round and I love that the girls can see her so strong and fearless walking into the Atlantic like it’s no big deal.
