What is moissanite?
Moissanite is a rare mineral, first discovered by Dr. Henri Moissan in a meteorite crater in Arizona in 1893. He discovered the precious gem in a meteorite crater in Arizona while examining rock samples from the meteorite that fell from the sky. At first, Henri thought that he had discovered diamonds. He later realised that the crystals were made of silicon carbide, making it one of the rarest minerals found in nature.
How it’s formed
As moissanite is so incredibly rare in nature, Henri wanted to find a way that science could reproduce this remarkable natural mineral. Nearly a century later and after years of experimentation, scientists at Charles & Colvard developed a process for developing moissanite in a lab by using a patented thermal growing process. Single-crystal moissanite is manufactured through a patented thermal growing process, the specifics of which are proprietary. The process is very difficult and is performed by only one company in the world, Charles & Colvard.
At Chupi, we source our moissanite gemstones directly from Charles & Colvard. They are the original creator of moissanite and the only company in the world to create the gemstone using a patented thermal growing process. They are dedicated to creating brilliant gemstones in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
The Mohs Scale of Hardness determines the hardness of a gemstone. The harder the gemstone, the more difficult it is to scratch. Composed of carbon and silicon, moissanite is one of the hardest and toughest known elements on earth. Ranking at 9.25 on the MOHS scale, moissanite is one of the most durable gemstones used in jewellery. The gem is highly scratch resistant and handles rough exposure extremely well.
A gemstone’s brilliance is determined by the gemstone’s ability to reflect white light. The brilliance of moissanite exceeds that of any other gemstone, including diamond, ruby or sapphire. The sparkle of a moissanite is often rainbow coloured rather than colourless.
Moissanite is created using minimal environmental impact and requires absolutely no mining to produce. Charles & Colvard, where we source our moissanite gemtones, develop the precious stone in a laboratory, bringing you a hand cut, socially responsible and eternally brilliant gemstone.
