In the latest installment of The Chupi Engagement Series, we speak to Founder & Creative Director of Chupi, Chupi Sweetman and Brian about their special engagement in Montpellier.
“I should have known something was up. We were in Montpellier in the south of France on one of our favourite sorts of holidays. We’d spent a few days in Barcelona going out and having fun then up to Montpelier to snooze and eat! We arrived late to Montpellier and crashed out our place. The apartment had those beautiful Floor to ceiling doors with a tiny balcony. The next morning, I had wild plans to read my book whilst curled up on the terrace. Brian has other plans, he kept trying to convince me to go to the botanic gardens. I couldn’t understand, I adore gardens & walking Brian not so much. I had no idea what he was planning!”
“He eventually gave up on me, I wasn’t going anywhere! Then he said he wanted to try this fancy restaurant on the other side of town. We had never been before because as broke, barely graduated and still figuring out twenty somethings we had never had the money but Brian insisted. I still had no idea!”
“It was the most beautiful evening as we walked home through the park. There was a wine festival on that week and all around us were happy families. We stopped to watch the stars beside one of the fountains. Even then I didn’t know what was going on!”
“The first moment it dawned on me was as Brian was going down on one knee and putting his hand into his shirt pocket (he had carried my ring for 6 days and was worried a box would be a dead giveaway!). He said all of the right things, he had bought the most beautiful ring (a grey diamond, set in recycled gold & made by hand from Etsy! That was the moment not only I agreed to marry him but fell in love with the idea of heirlooms). It was perfect!”
“We aren’t perfect, we are both opinionated and determined, both the eldest of our families. But we have built a really happy life together. I share other people’s most precious moments every day so I wanted to share mine with you guys. It’s nine years ago since we got engaged in Montpellier and I’m so glad Brian managed to convince a very cynical me that both love & marriage were possible.”
